Heart of a 1983
This 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 was acquired by the seller in August 2023 and currently resides on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio. The truck was repainted red and refurbished in a frame-off restoration in approximately 2012 in Washington State. Since then, the truck spent about time in Massachusetts near Martha’s Vineyard, and Pennsylvania. Although this FJ40 was built in 1972, it features a combination of the better steel used in the earlier FJ40 models with a later model 2F engine and drive train and modern upgrades.
The truck has been garage-kept and is in exceptional condition, with minor paint issues recently touched up. The front grill features new LED headlights that include a white halo running light option, as determined by owner preference. The removable hardtop was refurbished in 2023 with new top and bottom rubber seals, stainless steel hardware, and a new headliner. In back you will find the classic barn doors and lift-gate characteristic of the FJ40 models prior to 1974.
Power is provided by a de-smogged, 4.2-liter 2F inline-six cylinder (1983 date code) installed during the restoration, linked to a four-speed manual transmission with a dual-range transfer case. The engine is upgraded with a Holley Sniper II fuel-injection system and also features recent replacements of the distributor, ignitor, intake manifold gasket, valve cover and oil pan gaskets, new push-rods and valve seats, and stainless steel headers. Crankshaft clearances were checked and are within tolerance, and a compression test indicated all cylinders are good. Additionally, a new power steering pump and a new high-voltage alternator were recently installed. The electrical system is powered by a new Optima Red-top battery.
Inside you will be comfortable in the front ProCar bucket seats in black vinyl and a Bestop folding rear bench that tumbles forward. Equipment includes an OEM roll bar and the floors are protected with Rhino-liner. A three-spoke steering wheel frames a Dakota Digital RTX Cluster synchronized with the Holley EFI, and includes electronic gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The speedometer is enabled with a Holley GPS sensor. Total mileage was set to match the previous analog odometer. The audio system includes a custom Kenwood marine stereo mounted in a Tuffy center console with Kicker speakers in dual body-color painted speaker boxes mounted on the roll bar beside the rear seats. New ICON aviation-grade, tinted glass sun visors are mounted on the upper windshield. Furthermore, a steel gas tank replacement was installed under previous ownership, and new latches are on both doors.
Underneath, the truck rides on new, powder-coated, white OEM 15″ steel wheels wrapped in brand new BFG 33x10.50 A/T KO tires, including the spare which is mounted on a carrier at the rear with a third brake light installed inside the OEM hubcap. A new suspension system was installed in 2023, sourced from Redline Cruisers and touted as their “2.5 Ultimate Lift Kit with Bilstein Shocks.” The front wheels utilize Warn locking hubs. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums, and a Saginaw power steering system was reportedly installed in 2019. Additionally, a new stainless steel exhaust system was recently installed under previous ownership.
Included with the sale is two sets of keys, the original exhaust manifold, replacement jack, and toolkit.
